Anime-style couple in winter coats and scarves face each other on a snowy, lit city street at night, with flakes falling.
Silvia e Roberto?

Spoiler: in-love besties and shady boyfriends are a trope that never goes out of style. 🚩🍿 To avoid overthinking my own disastrous love life, I adopted the only anatomically sustainable survival strategy: focus entirely on other people’s romantic tragedies. Back then, our ecosystem was neatly divided into three micro-worlds:

1.Milena, constantly recruited into the Blonde Guy Army. On Sunday afternoons, we’d strut up and down downtown or hide out in one of the city’s endless movie theaters (which is why the local club saw us as often as a solar eclipse).

2.Silvia, the thrill strategist, who forced us to basically live in the arcade just to get close to this tall guy with long brown hair, almost always tied in a ponytail. His name was Roberto, and he wanted to be noticed at all costs. Since Silvia lacked any sense of shame, it was a mathematical certainty she’d pull it off.

3. Me, in the official role of the suspicious detective. While Silvia executed her seduction mission, I tried to figure this Roberto guy out. I caught him more than once dodging my investigative gaze—like he instinctively sensed I’d picked up on that one off-key note that ruined the whole melody. Sure enough, Silvia managed to get into his good graces and started ditching us on Sundays to spend time alone with him. Her excitement hit the roof. Every morning on the school bus, as we passed his house on the outskirts of town, the rambling would begin: 'I’m in love!'—heart beating out of her chest.

Milena? Completely distracted by her own guy of the week.

Me? Stressed out as the ignored Cassandra. Until that Sunday night. We were waiting at the bus stop for us all to head home together when we saw her running up—out of breath, pale as a sheet, eyes wide as saucers. I swear, my exact thought in that split second was: 'Yup, here we go.' Moments later, we were finally about to learn what was actually hidden behind that look—the one that had felt off to me from day one.

Moral of the story? Always listen to the paranoid friend in the group. That off-key note almost always turns into a full-blown hot mess of a orchestra. 🤷‍♀️✨
