Io credevo fosse impossibile, invece è successo.

The Courage to Run Away: When Love Is Too Terrifying to Live

There are glances that don’t just search for your face, but dig deeper, to the point of hurting. There are people who enter our lives like an unpredictable storm, threatening to sweep away every single certainty, every defense painstakingly built.

When faced with such an intense bond, the automatic temptation is to ask oneself: am I running away out of fear, or am I following a gut feeling?

The answer, often, is that the two merge together.

The Stage of Provocations

Picture the scene: a noisy dining hall, the clinking of cutlery, the curious glances of a whole school trip in Bolzano.

Edoardo decides it’s time for a showdown. He doesn’t choose the intimacy of a deserted hallway or the quiet of the evening; he chooses the loudest stage to challenge me. He wants to unmask me, to prove to everyone that my apparent indifference is nothing but a mask, that beneath the surface of a "haughty young girl" beats a vulnerable heart.

Faced with his loudly shouted provocations, I fight back. I hold his gaze, displaying a glacial, inhuman coldness, while inside me my blood boils with rage and terror. Meanwhile, a short distance away, Gloria stands frozen: she thought she had won him over, unaware of the invisible yet taut thread that continues to bind Edoardo and me.

But at a certain point, the rope snaps. When the tension becomes unbearable, I do the only thing that allows me to remain whole: I get up and run.

Running Away as an Act of Self-Preservation

I couldn’t afford to give him that power over me. The bond with that rebellious soul would have been too dense, too strong, and I had to withdraw if I wanted to preserve my freedom.

Running away, at that moment, was not a gesture of weakness, but an instinct of self-preservation.

When we feel that a emotion is "too dense," our internal alarm system activates. There was certainly the fear of the unknown: surrendering to such an overwhelming feeling means giving up control, laying oneself bare, and risking being destroyed. But there was also the premonition of something bigger: the intuitive awareness that tying oneself to such an unstable and rebellious soul would demand a very high price in terms of peace of mind and personal freedom.

Sweet Revenge in a Detail

Later, while the evening splits between those who take a risk to go to the nightclub and those who choose a walk through the center of Bolzano with true friends, there is room for a small moment of redemption.

To answer that sharp comment Edoardo made when we arrived — "You're too young" — I let the girl in the room next door do my makeup. That same girl, Edo’s friend, the one from the train. She wore her hair shaved on one side and dyed like Cyndi Lauper, her idol. She set to work as if painting a canvas. Accentuated cheekbones, enhanced almond eyes—a femininity blossoming and reclaiming its own space.

And then, the door opens.

Edoardo is standing there on the threshold. His arrogant look gives way to a sudden, almost disarming shyness:

«Hey... Wow, you’re beautiful.»

Underneath that makeup, my face burns, my heart races. But my gaze stiffens again. As much as those sky-blue eyes make my legs tremble, the decision has been made: no giving in. Yet my legs were giving way, and my heart was about to explode. When we were together, energy radiated everywhere—strong, dense—and people around us noticed and felt unsettled by it.

Fear or Premonition? The Truth Lies in the Middle

Returning to the initial question: was it fear of an unknown feeling, or the premonition of something too big?

It’s likely it was both, perfectly intertwined:

  • The Fear of Invasion: When you are very young, protecting your space and your identity is essential. Such a demanding and theatrical love risked swallowing you whole.

  • Intuition (The Premonition): Edoardo’s reaction after the clash — taking refuge in Gloria’s arms — reveals a certain emotional immaturity. Your intuition had already realized that he was trying to provoke you instead of understanding you, and that such a union would bring more chaos than stability.

Sometimes rejecting someone doesn't mean feeling nothing, but choosing yourself before losing yourself in someone else's shadow.

💬 And what about you?

Have you ever given up on a strong connection just because you felt it would overwhelm you and strip away your freedom?

Tell me about it in the comments!

I thought it was impossible, but it happened.
