Eravamo i Bischeri di
Campoverde/"We were the bleeding hearts of Campoverde."
MIO NONNO DICEVA SEMPRE IN TOSCANO CONTADINO " E' UN POERO BISCHERO, TROPPO BONO PEL MONDO"

Noi, 1985 circa.

“I felt lonely, and I pretended I wasn't.”
Leda Giuliani—Campoverde, a memory from 1984/1985 • handwritten in 2024 upon a memory from 1984/85
us, 1984/1985 — Campoverde
original photo transformed
Us, around 1985. The original photos were turned into manga drawings to protect everyone's privacy, but the sweaters stayed the same. The girl in the yellow top with her eyes closed—that’s me, Leda.
In those years—extraordinary in so many ways—there was only one item on the agenda: to devote oneself to the starkest materialism, card-carrying style. Poor souls like me were the so-called "bischeri"—the ill-fated, the soft-hearted—and having more pride than I knew what to do with, I began locking myself into a total, completely unnatural silence just to avoid being singled out. I silently observed the world around me with a mix of apathy and wonder, terrified by those dark energies whose very smell, I swear, I could catch in the air.
Because the "bischero", in Tuscan dialect and especially in Campoverde, aren't the silly
ones. They are the ones with an extra layer of sensitivity. Too much of it for this world as it is: unyielding, fierce, and waiting for no one. Especially back in the Eighties, when the rat race had just begun. A race toward who knows what.
note by ☾
“The bischero aren't the unlucky ones. They are the ones born with too much heart.”
Thus began my graceful retreat from conventional social dynamics. Everything that was deemed right out of mere formality and hypocrisy felt like a crushing weight to bear. I was growing up, and it was a difficult time, just as it is for any teenager. Only in my case, at times, I felt like sinking into the darkest abyss and disappearing. What a paradox for someone who had always been a spark of pure vitality. Of that vitality, nothing was left.
Then came that encounter. The kind that reminds you that you are more, that what you always knew deep down was the truth, and that you didn't have to bow to that purely pragmatic upbringing pounded into you with endless refrains of "be realistic." I was more. We are all more. And the height of irony was that, with Edoardo, the abyss and redemption began at the very same time.
After him came the visions. All at once, I returned to my world, my real one: made of visions and mysteries. The old questions about fate—the ones I had tucked away in a drawer because they weren't "practical"—resurfaced all together. In that mirror, I could see the full depth of the abyss I had to fall into. To face it, and then emerge as a better version of myself. More worthy... of what? Of whom? Or perhaps, quite simply, worthy of myself.
And yet, despite everything, I decided to surrender to those carefree years in the name of the deep bond of friendship with my old companions in adventure—the ones with whom I had started and shared the discovery of the world. So, plenty of music, movies, and laughter. A fine distraction to draw my attention away from my ghosts.
Inside, however, my balance was precarious, always one step away from madness. While everyone else was living it up as you were supposed to in those wild years, I felt like an alien who had landed by mistake on a strange planet—one I didn't understand, and that didn't understand me.
My thoughts never stopped. Never. They crowded my mind relentlessly, overlapping, tangling into a knot impossible to unravel. I was stuck there, churning through memories, images, opinions, judgments, impressions, dreams, and a heap of other things, sinking deeper into them. It was a pity those were topics no one else cared about in the slightest.
I couldn't make sense of anything. And I ask myself even today, as I try to tell my story: is there anyone out there who understands me? Anyone who has walked a similar path, paved with uncertainty and that constant feeling of being slightly out of place? Anyone who followed a road that seemed already laid out, without resisting, letting themselves be carried by the wind blowing everything in the only possible direction? With only one true domain left: the one over their own inner growth. And nothing more.

A note on privacy
This post isn't the first on the blog, but it is its core. The photos are real, but out of respect—for myself and those who were there—I transformed them into manga.
It isn't a filter to hide behind. It's a way to remember without exposing. The colors of the sweaters, the postures, that July light in Campoverde: everything remains. Only the faces have turned into line art, so they can remain ours.
