A quale parte appartenevamo?

Here is the English translation of the text:

Up until then, we all believed we were equal. It didn’t matter who was the child of a farmer or an entrepreneur: there were no barriers between us. We lived in a bubble where differences simply didn’t exist. I believed that all my problems lay in that hair they had shaved off, suppressing my emerging femininity. That was my tragedy. I was so young. But then the bubble burst.

Heroin arrived like a sudden plague, and some lives ground to a halt on a dead-end track. Many lost their way. Outside the school gates, the divide was visible to the naked eye: on one side were us, with books tucked under our arms and riding our bicycles, focused on the next day's oral exams, on soccer, on the parties where we danced to burn off our teenage hunger for life. On the other side were them. The most vulnerable, the ones our parents told us to stay away from. You’d see them exchanging small ziplock bags on street corners, with dull eyes and slowed reactions.

Suddenly, we realized we were different, and it was a bitter lesson. Which side did we belong to? The answer wasn't obvious for anyone.

When Christiane F. arrived in bookstores, everyone was talking about it. It was a punch to the gut. We understood that lightheartedness was no longer enough to protect us from the poison that human beings are capable of administering to themselves. In the years that followed, some fell, some got back up, and some didn't make it. The parish priest of Campoverde opened a shelter in the village church to serve as a buffer before admission into actual rehab communities. Some were saved; others we buried.

In that small village I had always believed to be a haven, I glimpsed hell for the very first time. I became aware that evil doesn't live far away: it lives right next door, in the blood of your own relatives, in the unpredictable face of someone who greets you in the morning. Growing up stripped away our rose-colored glasses. At first, the world was strictly black or white, but then life taught us to recognize every shade of gray.

Red book cover with a woman’s portrait and Italian text: CHRISTIANE F., noi, i ragazzi dello zoo di Berlino; stark, intense mood
L'anticamera dell'inferno.
